Soup with Barley:
First performed at The Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, 7 July 1958 for one week,
followed by a second week at The Royal Court Theatre opening 14 July. Directed
by John Dexter. Awarded Arts Council Bursary of £300. |

Roots:
First performed at The Belgrade Theatre 25 May. Directed by John Dexter,
designed by Jocelyn Herbert, starring Joan Plowright. Transferred to the
Royal Court Theatre on 30 June, and subsequently to the Duke of York's in
St Martin's Lane on 30 July where, due to abnormal heat wave (and despite
rave reviews) it ran for only a few weeks. Won The London Evening Standard's
award 'Most Promising Playwright'. |

English Dramatists' together with 'Each His Own Wilderness' by Doris Lessing,
and 'Hamlet of Stepney Green' by Bernard Kops. Roots published soon after.
